Add or modify your agency's jurisdictional boundary

An agency’s jurisdictional boundary is essentially an agency’s footprint on Nextdoor: all neighbors who live within this footprint are auto-subscribed to receive the agency’s posts in their newsfeed. In most cases, Nextdoor can pull a jurisdictional boundary from the Census Database, which contains all boundary data for cities, counties, and school districts across the US.

However, if your agency’s jurisdiction does not match the boundary of a city or county (for example, a special district or the unincorporated part of a county), you will need to send us a map file (often known as a shapefile) that represents your jurisdiction.

In order to submit a change to your agency’s jurisdictional boundary, you must complete the following two steps:

1. Fill out the map file submission form.
2. Send a map file that meets the requirements below to agencysupport@nextdoor.com, with “[AGENCY NAME] Jurisdiction Map File” in the title.

Due to the high volume of requests, it may take up to 2 weeks for your boundary to update.

Jurisdictional boundary map file requirements

• The file must only have one feature/row in the attribute table for your agency’s jurisdiction. Please do not send a file with multiple features that together make up your agency's jurisdiction.
• We accept either ESRI shapefiles, GeoJSON files, or KMZ/KML (Google Earth) files.
• If you send an ESRI shapefile, it must be in a single .zip format containing these four necessary pieces: .shp, .shx, .prj, and .dbf.
• The file must be a polygon, not a point or a line.
• The file must be in the WGS84 projection.
